TIPS FOR USING OUR SEPTEMBER CONTENT CALENDAR IDEAS

Choose the “days” or celebrations that your audience will relate to. Put yourself into the shoes of your ideal customer. What are they interested in, outside of your business and what you normally talk about? Do they love reading? Do they have pets? Do they love conserving nature? Just because they followed you for your business-related content, doesn’t mean they don’t want to talk about animals or art or alcohol. Get creative by using our weird and unusual holidays. Remember, posting about something like Chocolate Milkshake Day can make you more human and relatable? Everyone likes Chocolate Milkshake, right?

Remember this is not an exhaustive list. We can’t possibly list every single day of celebration for September. But it’s a good list to get you started. Feel free to search for other types of celebration days to add to this list.

Celebrated on the first Friday of September, this holiday is about giving Mom’s the day off from her normal household chores. Make sure you tell your children and partner that it is an actual holiday and that you won’t be cooking/doing the dishes/cleaning/doing laundry for one day. Put your feet up and enjoy.

2ND SEPTEMBER

NATIONAL BLUEBERRY POPSICLE DAY

These frozen treats are refreshing in hot weather. You can buy some to celebrate this holiday or, better still, make some. There are lots of recipes for making blueberry popsicles which range from healthy to decadent. Ask your fans to share their favorite recipe.

CALENDAR ADJUSTMENT DAY

In September 1752, we lost 11 days. Not sure where they went. Not really. Our calendars on this day changed from Julian to Gregorian, same one we follow today (along with a good portion of the rest of the world). In an instant, September 3rd changed to the 14th of September, so in effect, we had a time warp, wherein absolutely nothing happened for 11 days. Rumour has it, that some people believed that it would mean they would live shorter lives. You could share your appreciation for the calendar, or those lost 11 days!

INTERNATIONAL BACON DAY

If you think everything tastes better with bacon, then you will love this mouth-watering weird holiday. International Bacon Day is for people who appreciate the smell and sound of bacon cooking and, of course, the salivating salty taste of crisp bacon. Find a picture of a bacon in your favorite dish and get the conversation going.

WORLD BEARD DAY

It’s considered rude for men to shave on the first Saturday of September! This is the day to celebrate facial hair follicles. Beards are very trendy now ranging from goatees to bandholz. Apparently, beards are a sign of masculinity. Do you agree or disagree? Start a debate about beard vs no beards, or show some love by posting an image of your favorite beard.

INTERNATIONAL VULTURE AWARENESS DAY

Vultures are not attractive birds… they certainly lost out in the good looks department. They have unpleasant habits. They pick at dead carcasses. Their role in ecosystem is often misunderstood and many species are threatened by illegal poisoning. Conserving vulture species is important for ecology. International Vulture Awareness Day is celebrated on the first Saturday of September to raise awareness of these scavenging birds of prey.

Fun Facts about vultures: Vultures are social and there a few collective nouns associated with them depending on what they are doing. A group of vultures resting in a tree is called a committee, a group flying is called a kettle, and group feeding on a carcass is called a wake.

3RD SEPTEMBER

NATIONAL WELSH RAREBIT DAY

Welsh Rarebit used to be called Welsh Rabbit and no, there’s not a hint of bunny in this cheesy toast dish. The first reference to this delicacy was in 1725 was “Welsh Rabbit” fifty years later it had changed to “Welsh Rarebit”.  At that time, according to the Telegraph in keeping with the British tradition of taking a dig at the Welsh, the word “Welsh” often meant something substandard or fake. There’s a wide range of recipes ranging from simply melting cheese on toast to premixing cheese with flour, ale and mustard before pouring on bread. One thing all the recipes have in common is oodles of melted cheese.

SKYSCRAPER DAY

The first skyscraper was the Home Insurance Building in Chicago which was completed in 1885. It was the first building to constructed with a structural steel frame. Since then the race has been on to construct the tallest building in the world. At the moment, the tallest building in the world is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, U.A.E which is 2717 feet tall. That is until the Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia is completed in 2020. It will be 3,304 feet tall. Find an image of city skyline and share some fun facts about skyscrapers.

PET ROCK DAY

Pet Rock Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of September. The lovely thing about painted stone pets is that they don’t need any food or water and if you forget about them, all you need to do is dust them off and they are good as new. Pet Rocks started in the 70’s and recently they have had a revival with many Facebook Groups encouraging people to find pet rocks hidden in the local area, take a picture and then hide them somewhere new. Paint your own one or look out for pet rocks in the wild!

FATHER’S DAY (AUSTRALIA)

There are different theories why Father’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in September in Australia, and in June in many parts of the world. It doesn’t really matter. Father’s Day has been celebrated in Australia since 1936, and it’s good to celebrate your dad with a special day. Share Dad jokes or ask your fans for one word that describes their father.

WORLD SEXUAL HEALTH DAY 

Sexual health is often a taboo subject. The World Association of Sex Health (WAS) founded the day in 2010 to ensure that sexual health issues are discussed everywhere. It is celebrated in 35 countries. Help break the taboo.

NATIONAL MACADAMIA NUT DAY

The delicious, rich, buttery nut is celebrated around the world on the 4^th of September. Macadamia nuts are native to Australia, but did you know that now most will be are grown in Hawaii? LABOR DAY

Labor Day has been celebrated as a national holiday in the USA and Canada on the first Monday of September since 1894. It pays tribute to all the hard-working men and women who play a vital role in the economy. Labor Day marks the end of summer so, make the most of this occasion with a picnic or BBQ, attend a labor parade or use the day to enjoy a day with friends and family. 5TH SEPTEMBER

CHEESE TOAST DAY

Cheese Toast Day
Cheese + toasted bread = sandwich heaven. Remember the Sizzler’s cheese toast? We hear they released the recipe for that one – thick cut white bread, pecorino cheese and butter. NATIONAL BE LATE FOR SOMETHING DAY

National Be Late for Something Day make freak out particularly punctual people. It’s good to be reminded that sometimes you need to take the time to smell the roses. Be Late for Something Day was established by the Procrastinators’ Club of America shortly after they were founded in 1956.

The date of 5 September was chosen in order to commemorate the anniversary of the passing away of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 “for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace.”

GRANDMA MOSES DAY

It’s never too late to start something new! Grandma Moses only started painting in earnest at 78, when arthritis made embroidery too painful. She is an inspiration for anyone who thinks they are too old for a new adventure. She waited years to manifest her childhood dream. She was born on the 7^th September 1860 and died at the age of 101. She was a prolific painter who managed to produce 1500 charming rural landscapes in the last three decades of her life.

Since 2011, the 8th of September has been recognised as a day for the actors (like they need more recognition). Theatre, film, television, actors have blessed our lives from as early as BC times, particularly Ancient Greece, which is known as where the birth of theatre. INTERNATIONAL SUDOKU DAY

The World Puzzle Federation thought that 9/9 would be a symbolic day to celebrate Sudoku because of the 9 by 9 grid that is used for this brain teaser. The name “Sudoku” originates from two Japanese words: “su”, which means “number,” and doku, which means “single.” Even though Sudoku uses numbers, it doesn’t require any mathematics. It is all about logic.

The US Congress proclaimed the first Sunday after Labor Day as Grandparent’s Day in 1978. Celebrate the elder members of your family tree by doing something special for them. 9/11 REMEMBERANCE DAY

Where were you when you heard that two planes had crashed into the twin towers? In 2001, the world was shocked by four coordinated hijacking of American passenger-carrying airplanes by the Islamic terrorist group, al-Qaeda. Two were flown directly into each of the Twin Towers in New York, another into the Pentagon. The fourth crashed. The attacks killed about 3000 people and injured a further 6000, causing $10 billion pounds of damage. It was the deadliest terrorist attack in human history.

CELIAC AWARENESS DAY

Celiac disease is a digestive disorder caused by a negative reaction when someone eats food containing gluten. Gluten is found in wheat, barley, rye and oats, so foods such as bread, pasta, cereals, biscuits, cakes, pies, many every day foods. Depending on the severity of the gluten intolerance, it can inflame or completely destroy the lining of the small intestine, which leads to poor absorption of essential minerals and nutrients from food. WORLD PLAY DOH DAY

Did you know that Play Doh was originally sold as a wallpaper cleaner? The inventor, Joe McVicker didn’t have an advertising budget but managed to convince an American children’s show, Captain Kangaroo, to feature the product once a week for 2% of sales. COASTAL CLEANUP DAY

The third Saturday of September is International Coast Clean Up Day. There is 620 thousand kms, or 372 thousand miles of coastline in the world. More than a third of the total human population live close to the coast, this means there’s a lot of coastline to look after and a lot of hands that can help! If you’re one of the 2+ billion people who live near a coast, head on over there today to help reduce the amount of trash from the beach and waterways. If you don’t live near the coast or can’t get to the water today, you could help by doing something as simple as skipping using the plastic straw in your drink, or using a reusable water bottle instead of a single use plastic one. Every bit counts towards reducing the amount of waste in our oceans, this is our chance to make a difference and encourage the people around us to as well.

A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey conducted in 2014 found that 74% of American Adults prefer cheese on their burgers. According to the Guinness World Records, the largest hamburger weighed 913.54 kg (2,014 lb). And if you are making the largest hamburger in the world, would you make it a cheeseburger? Of course! The gigantic meat feast was topped with a massive 18.14 kg (40 lb) of cheese. Hungry?

WORLD BAMBOO DAY

Bamboo isn’t only food for Pandas. The first World Bamboo Day was celebrated in Thailand in 2009 to raise awareness of the benefits of this fast growing grass. NATIONAL PUNCH DAY

Rum punch originated around 1655. The oldest rum punch recipe is Bajan (Barbadian) rum punch. There’s a national rhyme about the recipe: “One of Sour, Two of Sweet, Three of Strong, Four of Weak.” The sour is lime juice, sweet is sugar, strong is rum and water is the weak. It is served with a dash of Angostura bitters and nutmeg.  Another popular rum punch drink is Planters Punch. Its ingredients are dark rum, pineapple juice, lemon juice, grenadine, sugar syrup and a few dashes of Angostura bitters. It would be rude not to celebrate this holiday without trying a rum punch. J.R.R Tolkien’s beloved characters for The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, shared a birthday on the 22^nd of September. Hobbits are unlikely heroes being between two and four feet tall, but they accomplish amazing feats. Hobbit Day has been celebrated since 1973, the year that Tolkien died.

WORLD RHINO DAY

There are five species of rhinoceroses. Two in Africa and three in Southern Asia. Three of the species are on the critically endangered list due to illegal hunting. Their horns are used in Traditional Chinese Medicines and as status symbols. There are less than 30,000 rhinoceroses in the wild. World Rhino Day is about raising awareness of this big herbivore.

DOODLE DAY

Do you sometimes draw while you are on the phone or in a meeting or in a meeting? Flowers, stick figures, animals, patterns, and the like. Scribbling down some drawings while daydreaming can be a rewarding experience, and potentially telling into the artist’s subconscious, a doodler’s doodles can tell you how they were feeling that day! Doodle Day was founded in 2004 as a way to raise money for epilepsy. Drawings are submitted with donations, or even auctioned off. Educational Technology is using computer software, or even hardware, combine with educational theory and potentially educational practice, as a way to teach the student about a particular subject. Technology is a big part of our lives, and using it in an educational way can help the student learn in a more interactive way, helping them to retain more information. RESTLESS LEGS AWARENESS DAY

Restless Legs Syndrome was discovered by prominent Swedish neurologist Karl-Axel Ekbom (1907-1977), so this day of awareness is on his birthday, the 23rd of September. Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) causes uncomfortable urges in the legs to move constantly, particularly at night, which effects the sleep levels of those who suffer from it. It is at this point, unknown as to what causes RLS, but it is thought to be linked with dopamine or iron levels. Today is a day to observe this condition and the people who have it, as the medical world are still looking for a cure.

Founded in 2017, by Polish company Noble Lashes, September 24th is the day for the Lash Stylist. There’s a fine art to being a lash stylist, or technician, so of course they deserve their own day of recognition!
