How to Use the December Content Calendar Ideas
Here’s are a few tips and tricks that will help you get the most out of this calendar:
- Choose the holidays and celebrations that suit your brand. Having some fun with unique and unsual holidays can be a great way to be relatable (and more human!) to your audience. Look at each holiday to see if it suits your “voice”.
- This list isn’t exhaustive. Use it as a starting point to think of ideas for content.
- Dates may change. Please note that the holidays featured, dates of celebration and hashtags may change on any given year. We will do our best to keep it up to date, but please check for changes before publishing.
- Check Instagram Hashtags. Although we aim to share hashtags that are not banned by Instagram, we recommend you still check as the status of a hashtag can change overnight. Use the tips in this post to check hashtags first. Over 100k hashtags are banned by Instagram at any time (temporarily or indefinitely). This is because the hashtag or content posted under that hashtag violates Instagram’s Community Guidelines. Unfortunately it also includes “normal” hashtags like “Easter, Valentine’s Day, New Years”. They’re “banned” or removed when content posted under the hashtag violates Instagram’s guidelines. Banned hashtags may change – so always check first.
- Get Creative. Use a template or add your own images and assets to illustrate the day you’re celebrating. Another alternative is to use a quote. For example, Walt Disney Day is a perfect opportunity to quote the famous man!
Month of December Content Calendar Ideas
Here are our local, national, international (and unique and unusual) holidays for the month of December:

EAT A RED APPLE DAY
As they say, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. The Red Delicious Apple is one of the most common varieties of apples in the world. Some other red apple varieties include the Fuji from Japan, the Gala from New Zealand, and the McIntosh from Canada. While we cannot tell you that it has been scientifically proven that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, we can tell you they are chock full of potassium, fiber, antioxidants, and vitamin C – which certainly could help. Celebrate apples!
Hashtag to use #EatARedAppleDay
FRITTERS DAY
We’d give you a fritters pun but it might be a bit corny. What could we turn into a fritter? So many options, across the sweet and savory palette. Fritters can make vegetables super edible, perhaps even for a picky young child still not used to all the different flavors. From apple to banana to zucchini and corn – even tempura – celebrate the humble “Fritter” in your December content.
Hashtag to use #FrittersDay
BARTENDER APPRECIATION DAY
It’s always a good day to appreciate bartenders, and it’d be easy to see why we have a day dedicated to doing just that! On a general scale, bartenders are under-appreciated – you’ve got the drink mixing/pouring skill, customer service, the tricks, and showmanship, add on the business, and a dash of tipsy customers – it takes a special person to be a bartender. Show your appreciation today by tagging your favorite bars and sharing some of your experiences.
Hashtag to use #BartenderAppreciationDay
FAUX FUR FRIDAY
The first Friday in December brings us to Faux Fur Friday. The verdict is out – we mostly no longer need to wear real fur. It’s been a hundred years in many countries since we have needed to use animal skin to keep warm and protect from the elements. There are so many clothing options available now, that are just as if not higher quality or warmer than real furs. Spread the encouragement for less real fur today, you can share some fur alternatives, in all kinds of special materials and patterns.

2nd December:
SPECIAL EDUCATION DAY
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was enacted on the 2nd of December, 1972. Before 1972, people with disabilities did not receive much if not any education. There were some special education schools in the U.S. prior to the act, but they were expensive so many families were not able to have their children included. Once IDEA was signed in, children and young adults with disabilities were given the right to free education, offering many people opportunities to learn and the opportunity to build a great life for themselves. To celebrate teachers, administrators, students, and parents the world over. Find out more here.

NATIONAL MUTT DAY
July 31st and December 2nd are the two days celebrating mutt dogs, otherwise known as “mixed breed” dogs. Pure bred dogs are often expensive puppies born from breeder’s dogs, and can certainly be of great use to humans, such as working dogs. Mixed breed dogs are more likely to be put down when they find their way to the pound. It is well-known that mutt dogs are often healthier and live longer than pure breed dogs. If you have been thinking about adopting a dog, head over to your local shelter and find the perfect mutt to add to your family. Celebrate your furry friend and find out more here.

BUSINESS OF POPPING CORN DAY
On December 2nd, 1885, Charles Cretors invented the first commercial popcorn machine. On top of building the machine, it was eventually upgraded to be on wheels, such as the popcorn stands we see on the streets or at sports games. Then there is the cinema machines, able to produce mass quantities of delicious warm popcorn, to enjoy whilst watching something on the big screen. The premise is simple: we can celebrate today by eating popcorn!

NATIONAL RHUBARB VODKA DAY
“Never rub another man’s rhubarb” – The Riddler
Rhubarb Vodka – that’s one to add to the drink bucket list. A fairly new blend, rhubarb vodka was invented on a commercial scale in 2010, by Maple River Distillery. It could seem strange to make a vegetable-flavored spirit, but believe it or not – rhubarb is actually technically a fruit, and the whole plant itself is more of a herb. Any drink celebration is a good celebration, right? Don’t drink alcohol? Why not try a rhubarb lemonade or rhubarb syrup to mix a mocktail?
Hashtag to use #RhubarbVodkaDay
3rd December:
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

UNDERDOG DAY
The third Friday in December brings us to Underdog Day. Life’s not all about the top dog, we love a good underdog story too! Apparently, one theory as to why we may be attracted to a good underdog story comes from the German psychoanalytical term “schadenfreude”, which is the experience of enjoying the tribulations of others. So if the underdog succeeds, it’s a great unpredictable celebration, and if they lose – well, they WERE the underdog, right? Interesting theory! Celebrating the underdogs of music, literature, movies, and life. Who’s your favorite unsung hero? Find out more here.

HOLLY DAY
Holly Day is celebrated every December 19th, recognizing the green plant with red berries that has been associated with Christmas for a long time. If you picture a Christmas wreath, it would very likely contain some holly. Holly has ancient religious connotations, relating to wintertime, dating back to Celtic and Norse times. Holly as a plant metaphorically represents growth and the life eternal. Today could be the day you make your own bough or wreath made of holly, and share your creation with your audience.

NATIONAL REGIFTING DAY
The third Thursday in December is Re-Gifting Day. Re-gifting can be seen as a negative action since it is assumed the person who gave you the gift in the first place may have put a lot of effort into thinking of your gift. It doesn’t have to be frowned upon, there is so much ‘stuff’ in the world, and the gift of giving, or re-giving in this case, can put a smile on someone’s face. Traditionally a fun day for office workers to re-gift unwanted office gifts, but it could also be used as a way to give back to those in need. Maybe put a twist on it and pay it forward in some way.

They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse
When you’re chewing on life’s gristle
Don’t grumble, give a whistle
And this’ll help things turn out for the best
And
Always look on the bright side of life”
– Eric Idle
